R W Walpoles

A fourth generation, soft fruit farm located on the deep, fertile silts of Marshland in West Norfolk. The business is run by Paul and Andy Walpole and Paul’s son Seth. They combine a varied fruit production enterprise with a more substantial business based on the propagation and marketing of a full range of soft fruit plants.

Open ground, unsterilized and unirrigated strawberries are the business' tour de force and this system puts it at the forefront of variety selection and development in order to meet this demanding production challenge. The farm has a reputation for producing superbly flavoured fruit using this growing system during the Junebearer season.  Flexibility of management and the proximity of the farm to the most comprehensive transport hub in the country results in Berry Gardens using this business to supply a wide range of their customers.

Walpole's are major committed to main and late season blackberries and the specialist production of cordon redcurrants and dessert blackcurrants. They pride themselves on providing a rather eclectic mix of fruit crops which regularly tests the marketing skills of the group.

The farm also has an active and managing role in the Nuclear Stock Association, Meiosis, the East Malling Strawberry Breeding Programme (1989–2008), and Hansabred. The ongoing farm-based trials programme underpins the innovation in this business.
